Start from Phoenix and travel the road through wilderness areas and across the San Carlos Indian Reservation to arrive in the town of Safford. Stay in a quaint historic B&B or a modern hotel to enjoy your experience in this corner of Arizona. Safford offers travelers a variety of outdoor experiences:
- Hike or drive to the top of Mount Graham
- Visit the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation area
- Star gaze from the Gov Aker Observatory
- Relax at numerous local Mineral Springs and day spas
- Go horseback riding in the Gila Valley
After relaxing and exploring Safford, travel south. Make a stop in Wilcox, apple country when in season, before moving on to route 181 to explore the Chiricahua National Monument.
- Hike the monument and explore the towering rock formations while enjoying the numerous forms of flora and fauna unique to this region.
- Visit Ft. Bowie National Historic site
- Go hiking or birding in Coronado National Forest
- Make a day trip to the Cochise Stronghold
Move on to Dragoon just off Texas Canyon before going back into Tucson and then up to Phoenix. In Dragoon you can visit:
- Local Pistachio and organic produce farms
- Tour the Amerind Museum
- Hike the Dragoon Mountains and visit the site of the Old Butterfield stagecoach stop and nearby Confederate soldier gravesites.
On your way back up to Phoenix make a stop at Picachio Peak State Park. Every October Picacho Peak hosts historic reenactments of the Civil War battles that took place in Arizona.
